Rethinking and Upgrading Private Signings

We introduced the Private Signings functionality to SCN way back in April 2010. I was excited at the time of launch, but I could have never imagined how popular they would become and how important they would be to our community of collectors. In 2021 alone, we had over 2,400 Signings posted on SCN!!!

While I am excited that we are able to offer this functionality, seeing this many signings get posted by subscribers (and approved by our admins) helped to see that we need to evolve the offering in a few ways. As always, the community's feedback has been super helpful.

Who can offer signings? Promoters...

Up until now, we required members to have a feedback score of 5 or greater to list signings. While it was helpful as an initial bar, it didn't feel like it was the right criteria. So today we are changing the way we will decide who can promote signings.

We are introducing a new privilege available to some subscribers that we call "Promoters". Our Admins are able to assign members as promoters, giving them the ability to submit signings for approval (All Signings will continue to need admin approval).

While we don't charge any additional fees for promoting signings, we are selective for who is able to promote signings on SCN and we now require an interview process where an admin (mostly me) will have a virtual video meeting with new or infrequent promoters. If you would like to sign up for a promoter interview, you can do so here (as shown below).

Enhancements for Managing Signings

We've made some much needed enhancements to help make it easier for our Promoters to manage their signings:

1) Filtering the list of Your Signings

The screen below shows how we have added the ability to filter signings by Active/Past, Approval Status, and by the Player:

signings_manage

2) More options on the detail page

On the detail page for each signing, the promoter will now see a bar at the top with options for:
  • Signing Detail and Message Board Thread
  • Agreed upon Transactions in the Trade Manager for that signing
  • Functionality to send a Private Message to all members that have Trades related to that signing.

  • signing_detail

    3) Ability to change the date of signing

We've learned that the dates of these signings sometimes need to be extended as player's schedules change. It has been challenging for both promoters and our admins to accommodate making these changes when necessary. And it was not always easy for promoters to alert customers when signings were being delayed / rescheduled.

On the detail page, promoters will see a change_date_button button for signings that are active or were supposed to take place within the past 30 days. Clicking on it will take promoters to the screen below, where we now offer the ability to extend signings for an additional 90 days:

    signings_change_date

PLEASE NOTE: Changing the date will automatically send a Private Message to alert all members who have a Trade for that signing in the Trade Manager.

    4) See all Transaction Details in one place

We have heard that perhaps the most challenging aspect of running a signing is to have all the info about that signing available in one place. It was frustrating for promoters to have to click on each trade to search for who was sending in and what they sent in.

We added a new screen shown below with all the details of all the trades associated with signing including:
  • Trade ID
  • Their Username
  • Their Address
  • What they get
  • What you get
  • Feedback you both have left

Fee icons on Latest Successes + Filtering Players by Fee/No Fee

We here at SCN want to wish everyone merry Christmas 2021 to our community and collectors everywhere. I was researching who I would write to this week and I figured there were a few things I could add that would be helpful - especially as more players are charging fees than ever before.

    1) Fee icons on Latest Successes

I was frustrated that when I was looking at the Latest Successes, it was not immediately obviously when there were Fees and Notes for those players. Now you will see and icons next to those players as shown below:

    latest_success_icons

    2) Filtering Team Rosters and Card Sets by Fee/No Fee

I wanted to make it easier to filter for whether players charge Fees. I have added dropdown choice to filter these areas as shown below:

    fees_filter

Filter on the Card Set page:
    card_set_fees_filter

Filter on the Team Roster page:
    teamroster_with_fees_filter

    3) Major performance enhancement on Card Set page

One of the most ambitious features on SCN is the correlation of cards and the players' signing habits. As part of coding up the Fee Filter detailed above, I made a major refactor of the code that has greatly improved the page's performance.

Making Custom Cards and getting them signed

I have long been an admirer of the many custom cards some of our members and other collectors make. For over 15 years, SCN has a area on our message board dedicated to Custom Cards and Graphics. There are some absolutely fantastic design, I especially love how some folks have incorporated cuts of deceased players in their own card designs (I wish I was that artistic).

I personally have a love for getting multiple players to sign cards, but it's getting a little tougher these days.

    Tallboy Trios

Around 2003-2004, I was learning how to use photoshop and thought it would be fun to combine some of the 1964 Topps Hockey cards into my "Tallboy Trios". I combined scans of 3 stars from a team and resized them to a standard card size (2.5x3.5 inches):

    Leafs Trio
    Candiens Trio
    Red Wings Trio
    Bruins Trio

Unfortunately I didn't think I could get 3 stars from the Rangers or Blackhawks from the set to easily get to sign TTM at the time, so I didn't make cards for them.

    Basketball Trios

As many folks on SCN know, I am really passionate about old school pro basketball (NBA & ABA). I have been working on standard issue projects related to 1960's-80's for a while (1970's leaders card, 1975 Topps team cards, 1980 Topps tri-cards, 1980 Topps posters). And I have been thinking about doing custom cards for this era also!

A while back, I found some designs another basketball fan made for Tallboys cards based on the 1965 NBA season. It's actually pretty challenging to find nice color photos from that time period that would fit with the vertical Tallboy design. This week I sent the card to Lenny Wilkens with a donation to finish up the card

    1965 Topps Hawks

I could not be more excited that I was able to finish it and by how it turned out.
