2021 turned out to be another very strong year for both the Sports Collectibles hobby and for our community. It's been exciting to see many new folks joining in on our fun and sharing their collecting passions here on SCN. I'd like to thank you all for your continued passion, sharing, and helpfulness that has brought me so much enjoyment running the site

I'd like to wish everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year for 2022! I hope all of your mailboxes are full and you have a great time enjoying our fun hobby.

BIG NEWS - one of our members elected to the Pro Football HOF

Ray Prisby makes HOF
Ray with HOF president David Baker
Ray Prisby (aka dawg3232) was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in February. What makes it so amazing is that it was based on his being a Cleveland Browns superfan and his collection of Browns memorabilia.

You can see some videos of his collection on our blog post. It was absolutely awesome when Jim Brown visited his home to present him with his candidacy for the Hall of Fame.

Congrats Ray!!!

Our Numbers

Every year I really enjoy capturing the totals of the amounts of amazing data that we (as community) have shared together and entered into the SCN databases. It continues to blow me away just how far we have come and how the site continues to grow. Below is a snapshot for the end of 2021:

Site enhancements and upgrades made in 2021

Signing Icons Signing Icons

Next to player listings thoughout the site we added a signing icon icon that denotes there is an upcoming Paid/Private Signing. You can click on the SIGNING icon next to their name to see details.

This feature release introduced:
  • Filtering Private Signings by Sport & Team.
  • Much easier sorting of Private Signings listed.

This feature release introduced:
  • Immediate processing for new subscriptions and renewals.
  • Support for credit card payments.

We added the ability to filter players by whether they do or not have a fee specified on their player profile in the SCN database.
Upgraded tools for Private Signings Upgraded tools for Managing Private Signings

This has been a major set of enhancements for promoters to manage their signings:
  • Filtering the list of Your Signings
  • More options on the detail page
  • Ability to change the date of signing
  • See all Transaction Details in one place
  • Ability to contact all traders for the signing at once

Many of our heroes have passed away

It has been gut wrenching to check the Passed Away section on our Message Board throughout this year. I counted 528 people in our database have been marked as passed away in 2021, including the 18 Hall of Famers below:

BASEBALL:
  • Hank Aaron
  • Tom Lasorda
  • Don Sutton
  • BASKETBALL:
  • Elgin Baylor
  • John Chaney
  • Sam Jones
  • Bob Leonard
  • Paul Westphal
  • FOOTBALL:
  • Curley Culp
  • Sam Huff
  • Claude Humphrey
  • Floyd Little
  • John Madden
  • Bill Nunn
  • Mick Tingelhoff
  • HOCKEY:
  • George Armstrong
  • Leo Boivin
  • Tony Esposito
  • Rod Gilbert
  • My personal collection

This was a really good for my collection overall.

Finishing a full set of cards is incredibly hard. For many years I have been 1 card away from finishing two basketball sets. This year I got the last to cards below to finish my sets thanks to members of the SCN community:
  • 1978 Topps Basketball (132 cards)
  • 1989 Hoops Basketball (352 possible cards)

1978 topps signed Pete Maravich 1989 Hoops Sylvester Gray

I sent out over 500 TTM requests (over 40% are 1970's-1990's basketball players) and I have a 70% success rate for the year so far.

My obsession with getting multi-signed cards continues as I have added a few nice ones. Below are my favorites:

You can click on thumbnail for larger view of the others I have gotten in 2021:

I got 11 more completed tri-cards from 1980 Topps basketball, now it is getting tougher:

I am still on the hunt for the following signed cards to finish my sets:
  • 1992 Pro Line Portraits Al Davis
  • 1992 Pro Line Portraits James Hasty
  • 1992 Pro Line Portraits Lynn Swann
  • 1993 Pro Line Portraits Wilber Marshall
  • 1977 Topps/ O-Pee-Chee Glossy Inserts (Round Corners) Wayne Cashman
  • 1977 Topps/ O-Pee-Chee Glossy Inserts (Round Corners) Ken Dryden
  • 1977 Topps/ O-Pee-Chee Glossy Inserts (Round Corners) Rick MacLeish
  • 1977 Topps/ O-Pee-Chee Glossy Inserts (Round Corners) Denis Potvin
  • 1977 Topps/ O-Pee-Chee Glossy Inserts (Round Corners) Jean Ratelle
  • 1977 Topps/ O-Pee-Chee Glossy Inserts (Round Corners) Darryl Sittler

    Rethinking and Upgrading Private Signings
    Wednesday, December 29, 2021

We introduced the Private Signings functionality to SCN way back in April 2010. I was excited at the time of launch, but I could have never imagined how popular they would become and how important they would be to our community of collectors. In 2021 alone, we had over 2,400 Signings posted on SCN!!!

While I am excited that we are able to offer this functionality, seeing this many signings get posted by subscribers (and approved by our admins) helped to see that we need to evolve the offering in a few ways. As always, the community's feedback has been super helpful.

    Who can offer signings? Promoters...

Up until now, we required members to have a feedback score of 5 or greater to list signings. While it was helpful as an initial bar, it didn't feel like it was the right criteria. So today we are changing the way we will decide who can promote signings.

We are introducing a new privilege available to some subscribers that we call "Promoters". Our Admins are able to assign members as promoters, giving them the ability to submit signings for approval (All Signings will continue to need admin approval).

While we don't charge any additional fees for promoting signings, we are selective for who is able to promote signings on SCN and we now require an interview process where an admin (mostly me) will have a virtual video meeting with new or infrequent promoters. If you would like to sign up for a promoter interview, you can do so here (as shown below).

    Enhancements for Managing Signings

We've made some much needed enhancements to help make it easier for our Promoters to manage their signings:

    1) Filtering the list of Your Signings

The screen below shows how we have added the ability to filter signings by Active/Past, Approval Status, and by the Player:

    signings_manage

    2) More options on the detail page

On the detail page for each signing, the promoter will now see a bar at the top with options for:
  • Signing Detail and Message Board Thread
  • Agreed upon Transactions in the Trade Manager for that signing
  • Functionality to send a Private Message to all members that have Trades related to that signing.

  • signing_detail

    3) Ability to change the date of signing

We've learned that the dates of these signings sometimes need to be extended as player's schedules change. It has been challenging for both promoters and our admins to accommodate making these changes when necessary. And it was not always easy for promoters to alert customers when signings were being delayed / rescheduled.

On the detail page, promoters will see a change_date_button button for signings that are active or were supposed to take place within the past 30 days. Clicking on it will take promoters to the screen below, where we now offer the ability to extend signings for an additional 90 days:

    signings_change_date

PLEASE NOTE: Changing the date will automatically send a Private Message to alert all members who have a Trade for that signing in the Trade Manager.

    4) See all Transaction Details in one place

We have heard that perhaps the most challenging aspect of running a signing is to have all the info about that signing available in one place. It was frustrating for promoters to have to click on each trade to search for who was sending in and what they sent in.

We added a new screen shown below with all the details of all the trades associated with signing including:
  • Trade ID
  • Their Username
  • Their Address
  • What they get
  • What you get
  • Feedback you both have left

Fee icons on Latest Successes + Filtering Players by Fee/No Fee
    Saturday, December 25, 2021

We here at SCN want to wish everyone merry Christmas 2021 to our community and collectors everywhere. I was researching who I would write to this week and I figured there were a few things I could add that would be helpful - especially as more players are charging fees than ever before.

    1) Fee icons on Latest Successes

I was frustrated that when I was looking at the Latest Successes, it was not immediately obviously when there were Fees and Notes for those players. Now you will see and icons next to those players as shown below:

    latest_success_icons

    2) Filtering Team Rosters and Card Sets by Fee/No Fee

I wanted to make it easier to filter for whether players charge Fees. I have added dropdown choice to filter these areas as shown below:

    fees_filter

Filter on the Card Set page:
    card_set_fees_filter

Filter on the Team Roster page:
    teamroster_with_fees_filter

    3) Major performance enhancement on Card Set page

One of the most ambitious features on SCN is the correlation of cards and the players' signing habits. As part of coding up the Fee Filter detailed above, I made a major refactor of the code that has greatly improved the page's performance.
