2 Million Successes on SportsCollectors.Net Wednesday, November 15, 2023 Posted by jaygross Comments: 0
Way back in 1998, I came up with the idea of creating a database for collectors to track when they mailed out a letter to athletes asking for an autograph. I went on to launch autograph request tracking as the key feature on SportsCollectors.Net in 2000 and it has been such a helpful tool for collectors. So many of us have been able to track my own successes and failures, and see how our collections grow.
Functionality that allows collectors to track autograph requests
Earlier this morning the SCN community hit a pretty significant milestone with 2 million successes tracked in our system. For context, the community of 1000's of collectors enter an average of over 300 successes each day. It still sometimes blows my mind that so many folks enjoy using this system and what we have accomplished as a group.
The 2,000,000th successes:
player: George Karl
date sent: 1/27/2021
date received: 11/14/2023
duration: 1021 days
received/sent: 3/3
Thanks to the community:
To show our appreciation, I am extending the subscription of 100 members by 3 months. We will be randomly selecting 100 active subscribers who have entered 10+ successes in the past 90 days. If you are selected, you will receive a message from us with the details.
I'd like to thank everyone for all your contributions and for making SCN what it is today, you are all amazing.

Happy New Year 2023 Sunday, January 1, 2023 Posted by jaygross Comments: 1
2023 is here and I want to wish the SCN community a Happy New Year.
Community stats
In 2022, we have seen great growth again with over 100,000 new successes entered in our database and over 1,000 new subscribers. It's always exciting for me to see collectors enjoying our hobby and I'd like to thank you all for the contributions to our community.
Some 2022 highlights for me and my collection:
- I sent out the most requests and got more mail back in 2022 than I have in any previous year:
- We added Completed Set functionality to the site and I finished my 4th set this week.
I have been working on the 44 card 1993 Pro Line Portraits set since they came out in 1993. For about 5 years Wilber Marshall (Super Bowl champ linebacker with the Bears + Redskins) was the last card I needed. I had never seen this card signed up until this month and he is not exactly easy to find these days, so I quickly acquired when I did. This is my 4th completed signed set.
- I went to card shows this year - after years of not going.
The National Sports Collectors Convention was in my home state of NJ, so I spent a full day attending my 4th National.
For over 30 years, there has been smaller local show in North Jersey (Garfield, NJ) that runs on Sundays twice a month. I got to attend it a few times this year with my son (now 11) this fall and got to meet some long time SCN members there.
- I made some more progress with my multi-signed card collection (It is definitely getting tougher, especially on those 1980 Topps basketball tri-cards):
For 2023:
- I spent a bunch of time in 2022 working on making performance improvements and on the administrative functionality for the site. I am hoping to roll out some fun new features for members in the upcoming year.
- I am planning to try to trade more cards + autographs this year and write to more players
- I am really close to finishing 2 more sets and I am still on the hunt for the following signed cards:
-- 1992 Pro Line Portraits Al Davis
-- 1977 Topps/ O-Pee-Chee Glossy Inserts (Round Corners) Ken Dryden
-- 1977 Topps/ O-Pee-Chee Glossy Inserts (Round Corners) Denis Potvin

Support for Completed Sets Monday, December 19, 2022 Posted by jaygross Comments: 1
Way back in 2010, I got really ambitious and launched my favorite SCN feature - Card Sets and Wantlists on SCN. It has massively helped me personally make progress on some signed sets.
Something nice we didn't think of
Long time SCN member pdg16 made a suggestion last month on our message board:
I have been lucky enough to finish a few sets being completely signed but would like a way to display that on my wantlist page. Once you complete a set it drops off my list completely. It would also be great to see sets that other members have completed.
Finishing a set is a HUGE accomplishment and I think it is a great idea!
The Solution
pdg16's suggestion is to have the completed set on the My Wantlist page (as shown below):
We added a new button called "Mark Set as Complete" on the Card Set page below (shown in the red box):
