There are pretty interesting and incredible folks in this community, both as collectors and as people. It was a huge reason I wanted to create SCN, so I could meet other folks who share this fun hobby with me. You all continually amaze me!

Long time SCN member dawg3232 (Ray "Showdawg" Prisby) is a passionate collector focused on his love for his Cleveland Browns. I'd venture to guess he has the best Browns collection around.

Here are links to videos of some of his collection:

Ray was nominated as part of the Ford "Hall of Fans" contest to find the biggest football fans around the country and the winner(s) would be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall fo Fame. Ray posted the below video on our message board:

I can't even imagine the thrill of having an all time great (and maybe the greatest athlete and football player ever) like Jim Brown come visit his home and present him with such an award.

Here is a video of Ray being interviewed by Fox 8 news in Cleveland, as it shows some nice shots of his incredible collection:

So the 3 finalists were flown down to Tampa to attend Super Bowl LV. They represented the Browns (Ray), Cardinals (Kristi Brown), and Raiders (Wayne Mabry). They were told that only one super fan would be selected as the winner that weekend. Here are pics of the finalists at the big game:

David Baker (yes, he's 6'9) is the president of the Hall of Fame, and he is well known for being the person who shows up at players homes to tell them they have been selected to join the Hall of Fame. He wound up surprising all three finalists and let them all know that they are all winners - meaning they will all be joining the Hall of Fame. Here are pictures Ray shared:

And this was my favorite video about it (shows more of his great collection):

Hearing this story is one of my favorite things that has happened in our community (over 20+ years), and gave me so much enjoyment.

Congratulations Ray and thank you for sharing your story with all of us other crazy collectors!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Signed 1989 Perez-Steele Celebration Set

Long time SCN member Kaneen recently posted on our message board that he completed the Perez-Steele "Celebration" Set.

Background on the set

The boxed presentation set was released in 1989 to "celebrate" the 50th anniversary of the Baseball Hall of Fame. 3 of the included players passed away during the set's production (Bill Terry, Judy Johnson, Lefty Gomez), so only 41 of the 44 numbered HOF cards were possible to be signed. Those 41 possible signed cards are all pictured in the posts below, as well as the check list card signed by the artist, Dick Perez.

The design of these postcards was inspired by the 1887 W.S. Kimball & Co. Champions (N184) set. Measuring 3-1/2" by 5-1/2", the postcards present profile paintings of the inductees on the top two-thirds of the card fronts with smaller action paintings below them.

"By that time, we had already produced the Hall of Fame art postcards and we had started the Great Moments [postcards]," explained Perez. "And, of course, with the Hall of Fame art postcards, the majority of the inductees had died. With Great Moments, we had started creating postcards of a little over half of the past Hall of Famers and a few of the current Hall of Famers; and what we found out was that collectors were really interested in getting these signed. So we started shifting our emphasis to living Hall of Famers. With the Celebration set, we decided to create a set totally devoted to living Hall of Famers."

I would assume this set has certainly appreciated recently in value. I found that a few older auctions for the signed set:
  • Robert Edwards Auctions in 2016 sold for $1,440
  • Heritage Auctions (40 cards, without the Campanella) in 2019 sold for $1,320
