SportsCollectors.Net and Web 2.0

First off, let me start by saying that I am a tech geek/serial entrepreneur and this post may not interest many of our members. I am always trying to follow interesting companies and technologies that pop up.

Lately there has been a tremendous amount of hype around what is being called Web 2.0. With all the media attention of Fox's purchase of MySpace ($583M) and Google's acquisition of YouTube ($1.65B), it seems there are tons of sites popping up daily where users contribute information, along with some interesting business models and technology propositions.

Everyone seems to define Web 2.0 differently - whether it's about social networks, connecting people through friends, sharing content, or using cool technology like ajax and services. I think this definition by Tim O'Reilly sums it up well:

A true Web 2.0 application is one that gets better the more people use it ... The real heart of Web 2.0 is harnessing collective intelligence.

[In] the world of Web 2.0 ... we share our knowledge and insights, filter the news for each other, find out obscure facts, and make each other smarter and more responsive.

When I read this quote, it got me thinking just how special our community is here. The more people that contribute to SportsCollectors.Net, the better it becomes and the more it may help all of us individually. I can't even to tell you all how many emails I have received thanking me for creating this site and how much enjoyment it has provided its membership. I came up with the idea of sharing our collective experience to help one another back in 1998, and it seems like so many other companies would like to follow the example we have set together.

I have built all kinds of sites and tools over the years, including a social network with over 500,000+ members. I am a huge believer that groups of passionate people (like the members of this site) can provide the greatest possible benefit - and I will continue to develop more projects with this in mind.  I plan, in the very near future, to announce a new project that expands on this belief and I think will deliver significant value to it's audience. so please stay tuned...  as I think many of you will be interested.

Updated on 12/7/2006: that new site is AuctionCapture.com

Leon Washington Rookie - What's all the Fuss?

Back in 1989 Fleer put out a card of Orioles 2nd baseman Billy Ripken that quickly became in high demand. It's not that people all the sudden confused Billy with his HOF brother Cal, but the bat he was holding in the picture had an obsenity on the handle (@!#$% Face). Today that card has about a $30 value instead of the 5-10 cents most of Billy's card go for.

Fast Foward 17 years to 2006 and it seems like the card manufacturers have made another snafu. I was reading on ESPN.com Trading card of Jets rookie RB creating a stir. It seems that Topps (in it's 2006 Bowman issue) allowed for a photograph of Leon Washington with his arms crossed holding up his middle fingers on both hands (pictured below).

Now things like this happen and we can all forgive the manufacturer and even the player for the incident. What made me do a doubletake and take notice was when I got a message form SCN member gopackwis, about a recent eBay Acution where the card had sold for.... get this.... $176.50. Are you kidding me? I know I don't buy as many new cards as many other collectors, but there is no way, I say NO WAY, I would ever consdier forking over $20 for this card. Before the hype, this card was selling for about $12 on eBay.

I am in shock the DiMaggio/Monroe picture went for $78K. I know his autograph is always in demand and her's is even more so, but that is a lot of moola... On the flip side, I would have thought beat up ball signed by Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson, and Ty Cobb would have went for more than $850
